George Ekem Ferguson, a representative of the Gold Coast Colonial Government, visited the Banda area in December 1894 and met with representatives of the Banda chief at Lawra (later called Bui). Here they concluded a Treaty of Friendship and Trade. Ferguson’s account of his visit is included along with the text of the treaty between "Se Yau" [Sie Yaw Dwuru] "King of the country of Banda" and "Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain…" The treaty lists 24 signatories, including a number of chiefs, headmen and the queen mother.
